Our Unwritten Seoul Episodes 1 Recap

The episode opens with a short montage of the children—the toys they have, such as a train, duck toys, dollhouses, and other cute things. Then we cut to a little girl opening a book that shows an image of both of them inside their mother’s tummy.

Their mother had recognized two heartbeats during her pregnancy, and their father, elated by the news, named the eldest daughter Mirae and the youngest, Miji. He was the one who stayed by their side while their mother worked, but sadly, he passed away.

As they grew up, the sisters would often switch places to avoid things they didn’t like—Mirae, who was often unwell, disliked herbal medicine, while Miji struggled with math. However, their little ruse didn’t last long, and eventually, they were caught.

In high school, Miji was always the first to sneak out of class during lunchtime. Noticing her speed and natural talent, the coach encouraged her to pursue an athletic career. She went on to win many awards, but her illustrious journey came to an end due to a career-ending injury.

Miji eventually became a janitor at a preschool, while Mirae became a lawyer at a public corporation. Miji works at the same school as their mother, who, despite everything, seems determined not to take credit for raising a successful daughter.

Miji applied for a job at the Office of Education but didn’t get it. Instead, she was offered a full-time position at her current workplace. However, feeling guilty about taking over the job of someone who is on sick leave, she turns down the offer.

Now in her thirties, unsure of what she truly wants in life, Miji begins to feel the weight of time pressing down. Maybe it’s finally time to take life a little more seriously.

Lee Ho-su is a deaf lawyer with the ability to read lips. He manages to deduce that a key witness has been bribed. As his female colleague calls out to him, he doesn’t hear her. When she grabs his arm to get his attention, he startles and accidentally knocks over her cup.

Later, in his office, he quietly changes into a spare shirt. As he unbuttons the old one, a burn scar on his arm is briefly revealed. His female senior notices him adjusting his worn-out tie and remarks, half-teasing, "Why do you always wear that old tie when you visit your mother?"

Ho-su gives a faint smile. "To look good," he replies.

Miji also works part-time at a supermarket, where her friend Song Gyeong-gu offers her the opportunity to become a deputy manager. She politely declines. Later, Jo Myeong-gap, an older man and Gyeong-gu’s senior, tells her about a job at a strawberry farm that offers unusually high pay.

Miji grows suspicious—the offer seems too good to be true, and she suspects something shady might be behind it. Her mother scolds her for even considering the job, warning that if she keeps chasing uncertain paths, she’ll end up struggling in old age.

Meanwhile, we learn that Bun-hong who gave advice to mi ji is Ho-su’s mother, has taken a keen interest in setting him up with Mirae. One day, he bumps into Mirae and casually asks about her—clearly referring to Miji. Oh boy, Mirae does not like that. She slams the gate shut behind her, but Ho-su, unaware, doesn’t hear a thing.

Miji and Ho-su’s relationship had a rocky start. Miji didn’t know about his disability at first, and Ho-su, aloof by nature, had made up his mind not to get involved with others. She confronts him and they both get in trouble with the teacher.

Ok-hui, the mother of the twins, asks Miji to call Mirae. Miji does, but Mirae is dealing with problems at work and decides not to come.

Later, Ho-su suggests to his mother that they should hold the memorial ceremony at the temple, but she responds gently, saying, Preparing so much food is as much for the living as it is for the dead.

Han Se-Jin is the one recruiting for the farms, and he has a few obnoxious friends who often make fun of him. He learns about Mi-Ji and how she’s doing this for her grandmother, who might need help at any time in the hospital.

Mi-Ji's grandmother clearly doesn’t want her to come anymore, but Mi-Ji still insists—probably because her grandmother is the one who practically raised her. Mi-Rae supports the family financially but seems emotionally absent, spending most of her time at the office working herself to the bone.

Mi-Ji keeps kicking a ball, thinking of herself as deflated—just like it. When Ho-Su asks about Mi-Rae again, she accidentally hits him in the head. It's not the first time—back in high school, she once hit him with a football too. When he panicked, she held his hand and calmed him down. She used to pester him constantly, even as he was leaving, until one day he told her he was 'crippled.' Later, her sister reveals that half his body was destroyed and that he has a hearing impairment. Mi-Ji feels awful for having treated him so badly.

As an adult, Mi-Ji treats Ho-Su’s injury with an ice pack. He tells her that Mi-Rae avoided him too—practically ran away. Then, with a faint smile, he says Mi-Ji is a good person, someone who puts others at ease—even managed to befriend someone like him. He adds that he once heard Mi-Rae never cried at the hospital, except in front of Mi-Ji.

She goes to Seoul to meet Mi-Rae, who pretends to be coming froom work and takes her to a cafe. There she talks morbidly about ways to hurt herself  to skip work and confesses that she wishes to live Mi-Ji's life.

When Mi-Ji goes to the restroom and returns, Mi-Rae is gone—leaving her phone behind. Realizing something is wrong, Mi-Ji rushes to Mi-Rae’s apartment. In an attempt to save her, they both fall, but luckily no one is hurt.

We learn that Mi-Rae had a kind superior with a strong sense of justice. Mi-Rae often helped those around her, but one day, when she discovered her superior’s wrongdoing, she became a target of office bullying. Mi-Rae initially decided to support her superior, Su-Yeon, but when Su-Yeon gave up, Mi-Rae became the target of ostracism herself.

Mi Ji helped Ho su in past by hitting his bully with a ball. We see that she always went above to help those she loves so instead going back to seoul she decides to switch places.
